[CHARACTER]

Name: Nathaniel Essex
Codename: Dr. Essex will do, thankyouverymuch
Age: 164 years old, born January 20th, 1846
Character Base: Mr. Sinister

Home Reality: Earth-514 (Same as [info]glinting and [info]shroud.)

What did this person do wrong to be pulled out by the Timebroker? The powerful being En Sabah Nur will finally wake from hibernation, this time offering his treacherous protege something he cannot refuse: knowledge. The Timebroker has pulled Essex from his reality hoping to reconnect him with his humanity so that Essex will be prepared to fight En Sabah Nur once more.

Appearance: At first glance Essex appears tall measuring six-foot-five in height with a trim physique. Anyone who attacked him would be taken aback by his weight, at least three hundred pounds of unnaturally dense bone and muscle tissue.

His skin naturally lacks melatonin, making it white in appearance and his eyes are a deep garnet red which sometimes emit a faint glow. In social situations he can change his appearance to imitate Caucasian skin, blue eyes and a more natural brown colored hair. Though his appearance is limited only by imagination, Essex feels most comfortable in his own skin.

Though he has, to a limited extent, been able to adapt with the times, Essex hates casual clothing. He prefers well fitting trousers in either grey or black, dress shoes and neatly pressed oxford shirts in either white or black. At work he almost always donning a lab coat which makes his natural appearance that much more intimidating and clinical.

PB: Benedict Cumberbatch

Powers:
Complete control of his body at the cellular level. • Essex is fully aware of his body on the cellular level, able to manipulate groups of cells to change or alter their function entirely. Because of this, he is effectively immortal. It also gives him the ability to shape shift, a superior healing factor, super human stamina, reflexes & strength.

This ability in combination with his psionic powers makes Essex a formidable, almost unkillable opponent. He could be shoved though a meat grinder, turn off his pain receptors, use his telepathy to remain conscious, and combine his telekinesis and cellular control to reform and make a complete recovery at an alarming rate. He would be terribly annoyed by the loss of his lab coat, however.

Telepathy & Telekinesis. • He can read minds and project his own thoughts into the minds of others within a radius of 250 miles. Like many telepaths Essex is also capable of astral projection. He is also able to induce temporary mental or physical paralysis, control a single mind at a time within his physical presence, mentally paralyze a target via touch, as well as psionically "turn off" the superpowers of any mutant.

With his telekinesis Essex can levitate as much as ten (short) tons, manipulate living beings, inanimate objects, and to some extent energy, psionically. Essex can use his telekinesis to fly but finds the prospect completely undignified and prefers not to. This does not mean he hasn't honed this ability should the need arise, but he will be irked.

Concussive Blasts. • Exactly like it sounds, he can fire blasts of concussive force from his hands.

Skills:
Genius Level Intellect. • Dr. Nathaniel Essex's accomplishments speak for themselves.

Doctor, Researcher, Geneticist & Engineer. • Essex is a genius geneticist who's research and theories were half a century ahead of their time, a brilliant biologist, and a skilled surgeon who is well practiced in the science of cloning. Essex is also responsible for developing many of the medical tools and inventions needed to conduct his research.

Many of his bases seem to have some quasi-biological properties and the lab is no different. Essex prefers that his lab remains independent of the mansion's power source and is currently designing a semi-conscious biological creature that receives its nutrients from the grounds, would have security features and have the intelligence of a goldfish. Essex estimates the project will take about twenty-five years to complete.

Skilled Manipulator. • Essex doesn't need his telepathy to cruelly deconstruct someone to the point of an emotional break down. Not that Essex would want to deal with cleaning up the mess afterward, but he has been known on multiple occasions to manipulate others for his own purposes.

Weaknesses:
Rumor & Speculation. • For reasons unknown to him, Essex has for his very long life been the target of vicious rumor regarding his work. He's been accused of being a monster, a spy, a Nazi sympathizer, of using unwitting human test subjects, of digging up the corpses of loved ones, commanding thugs with an iron fist to go out and slaughter for him, having a secret collection of the genetic material from thousands of subjects spanning over a century (this one is true). What makes this worse is many of the rumors about him may be true regarding alternate versions of himself. (Essex theorizes the rumors may be related to a Jung-style trans-dimensional universal subconscious.)

Pride. • Essex doesn't ask for help when he should and has yet to admit he's ever been wrong (which he has, but not for the reasons most people think).

Inability to socialize. • He knows how to, in theory, but Essex doesn't understand the concept of getting along for the sake of getting along. This doesn't endear him to many, if anyone, which could be hazardous if he ever requires the life saving assistance of another.

Personality:
Functional sociopath. • Essex is cold, calculating and normally quite dispassionate. He does not feel guilt and can not be shamed using conventional social standards.

Neat freak. • Everything about his lab is immaculate. His clothing is always neatly pressed. There is not a hair or skin cell out of place. He does not hide disdain for those who practice substandard hygiene.

Erratic eating habits. • Essex is completely and totally aware of how many calories he must consume in order to maintain what he has. That being said, in the middle of his work his body will occasionally start to cannibalize itself and Essex will go weeks without eating if in the middle of a particularly vexing problem. Afterward, the binges that he goes on can be alarming, particularly with his preference for raw food, including meat.

Arrogant. • Perhaps well deserved, but not especially endearing.

Likes. • The Science Channel, reading medical and scientific publications, his work, gardening, new ideas.

Dislikes. • Women (he doesn't understand them and no one compares to the memory of his late wife), highly emotional people, ignorance, fiction.

Overview:
The Victorian Age. • A brilliant scientist influenced by the works of Charles Darwin as a boy Nathaniel Essex married into money when he fell in love with Rebecca Milbury. His first scientific accomplishment came when he discovered "The Essex Factor" later shortened to "X Factor." Initially Essex used much of his wife's inheritance to fund his research, which nearly ruined them when his (correct) theories were ridiculed. This started terrible rumors that Essex was a mad man, digging up human and animal cadavers for his research much like Victor Frankenstein. His pregnant wife later died of consumption which in turn started rumors that she rejected him for his wicked works which caused her to miscarry and commit suicide.

The university where he worked, on the verge of firing Essex, uncovers the tomb of En Sabah Nur. (Essex's father-in-law was a member of the influential Hellfire Club, and having married into the club Essex had been so far able to use the last of his influence to remain employed.) En Sabah Nur awakens and, fascinated with Essex's work, attempts to enslave the young doctor. An almost otherworldly being of superior intellect who's witnessed nearly the entire course of human civilization, En Sabah Nur uses his power to force a terrible transformation on Essex, mutating him into an immortal being with cellular control, powerful psionic abilities while stripping away many of his more human emotions and reservations.

En Sabah Nur, now calling himself The Apocalypse, wanted Essex to develop a terrible plague which would wipe the human race from the Earth. Instead Essex engineered a plague specifically designed for his master, forcing En Sabah Nur back into the tomb he'd been discovered in. The tomb was in fact a technologically advanced hibernation chamber which fantastically teleported to an unknown location. Essex spent decades tracking the location of the device and watching for signs of The Apocalypse.

Turn of the Century. • Essex posses as his own offspring in an attempt to clear his reputation and readmit himself into the good graces of the scientific community. He introduces the mutant Jacob Shaw to the Hellfire Club, radically altering the gentleman's club into a secret society for the gifted. By the twenties, Essex has broken the genetic code for human DNA. Before World War Two, a mentally unstable actress falls in love with the mostly emotionally unavailable Essex and kills herself. Once again this spawns rumors that Essex was more sinisterly involved in Faye Livingstone's undoing.

World War Two. • By now the Essex family line is ripe with wild rumor and speculation. Essex is falsely accused of collaborating with the Nazis. This was, in fact, a German plot to recruit Essex for their own purposes or see that he did not survive should his research be used to help Allied Forces. Allied Intelligence eventually clears his name but not his reputation and Essex leaves for America to continue his research, largely contributing to the infamous Project Super Soldier responsible for producing one of America's greatest heroes. Essex's work, however, is fairly criticized for the numbers of volunteers who died in the experiments.

Post-War. • By now Essex is now posing as his own human grandson (and more recently, great-grandson). His work is largely funded by the American government, who has been largely invested in his "family's" work on the X-Factor since the 1940s when (some of) his genetic theories were finally accepted. Since his work is often ahead of its time, Essex's findings are often decades old when presented or published.

Dr. Nathan Essex splits his time between working in a research lab located in California and the estate of his deceased wife, Milbury Hall, located outside of London and now converted into a lab used for personal research. Despite his work for the government, Essex has also secretly conducted research on behalf of the Hellfire Club. Essex is aware what his research has been used for, good and bad, but is hardly concerned. That he can continue his work is all that matters to him, regardless of dimension.

He currently has a special arrangement with the Timebroker to patch up his Exiles as Dr. Essex continues his work. He has a new lab in the (no longer) secret lower levels of the mansion which are adjacent to his sleeping quarters.
